How to improve your internet speed

Internet feeling slower than usual? There’s a way to find out for sure, and we have some easy tips to bring it up to speed!

It’s normal for broadband speeds to differ from time to time, but if you’ve noticed a dramatic change, you should start with a speed test.

They’re a quick, easy way to know how fast your connection is. An online test like this can tell you your upload and download speeds. Measured in megabits per second (Mbps), a higher Mbps reading means faster speeds.

If your internet speed is slower than usual it could be due to:

  • The location of your router
  • Distance of your router from your devices
  • How your router is connected
  • How many devices are connected

Improve your internet speed with these top tips:

  1. Find a good home for your router

The closer your devices are to the router, the better your signal and connection will be. The perfect spot will differ from home to home but try not to hide it in a corner or behind your TV.

A clear path from your router to your devices will ensure faster broadband speeds. If it’s not in a great spot, physically moving the router can make a big difference.

  1. Your wires matter

Ensure your router is plugged directly into the wall socket and not connected via an extension lead. The further your connection must travel, the slower it will be.

If you need to use an extension cable to ensure your router is well-positioned, get yourself a new high-quality one with the shortest possible length. Long, tangled wires can also slow speeds.

  1. Disconnect unused devices

All devices which are using the internet share the same connection, so it can be slower if many devices are in simultaneous use (for example, working from home with a smart TV in the background). To have the fastest possible speed, disconnect any devices you’re not using.

  1. Get connected to full fibre

The best way to instantly improve your broadband speed is to get full fibre! Full fibre networks can work up to 30 times faster than the copper networks currently installed across rural parts of the UK.

With a fibre connection, you can simultaneously work from home, stream movies, video call your loved ones, and shop online with ease. You’ll spend less time waiting and more time doing the things you love. Register here to find out more!

We specialise in designing, installing and connecting residents and businesses to full fibre networks. As a registered company with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s Gigabit Voucher Scheme, we’re focussing on installing full fibre in rural parts of the UK. If you’re eligible for one of these vouchers, you can get free installation!
